Chocolate Avocado Mousse
I've had so many requests for this recipe, it's a delicious favorite of mine. My husband requests this avocado mousse on a regular basis. It's simple and amazing.
I was first introduced to avocado chocolate mousse during a food detox in 2010 with another health coach (yes, coaches have coaches!). She had this mousse as a menu item for a food detox. This was the moment I started to learn about how healthy food is delicious and we didn't need to eat junk food to satisfy any craving. In fact, cravings are your body's way of searching for balance, but more of that at another time!
The following recipe is vegan, refined-sugar-free and gluten-free. It is made from real, whole foods that your body knows how to digest and assimilate. You're not going to feel a frazzled sugar crash from this! If you are sensitive to the caffeine levels in chocolate (especially raw cacao) then I advise not eating this mousse after 5 pm, unless you want to stay up past midnight!
If you're not familiar with raw cacao (this is the GOOD chocolate, available in Whole Foods or your local health food store). Agave is available in many supermarkets and health food stores. It is a lower glycemic sweetener that tastes great.
Chocolate Mousse
4 ripe Haas avocados
3/4 cup agave nectar (add 1/4 cup more if you like it really sweet!)
1 tablespoon of vanilla extract (or ground vanilla if sensitive to alcohol)
1 cup of raw cacao powder
pinch of sea salt
Slice each avocado open and scoop out the flesh. Compost or trash the seed. Place the flesh in a food processor or blender. Add the agave, vanilla and salt. Process until blended. Add the cacao at the end and process until fully mixed. Chill in the fridge for about an hour.
Optionally, add in 2 tsp of ground cinnamon and/or 1 T of unsweetened, shredded coconut. I challenge you to serve this to your family and tell them later what's in it! Don't worry about the fat content of the avocado in this. If you are indulging, enjoy this healthy treat. It is way healthier than a processed food or bakery snack and your body will be happy!
Please let me know if and when you try this recipe and what you think. It is one of my absolute favorites and it will change your thinking about avocados forever!
